Barbara Louise Matz (Ray)
July 4, 1943 - July 8, 2024
Barbara Louise Matz (Ray), our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt passed away
peacefully in her sleep on July 8, 2024, in Wheeling, West Virginia. Born on the Fourth of July in
1943, Barbara seared the spirit of independence and love into everything she did - her brilliant
and blazing presence a warming light to those of us lucky enough to have basked in her smile.
Barbara was a proud resident of Martins Ferry, Ohio, where she spent most of her 81 vibrant
years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Douglas Ray and Louise Cunningham Ray,
her beloved grandparents, John and Hazel Cunningham, whom she affectionately called “mom”
and “dad,” and her brothers Johnny, Curtis, Billy, and Michael Ray.
She is survived by her devoted children Kimberlee Holmes, Kenneth Holmes Jr., and Bridgette
Hardy (Robert Hardy). Barbara’s legacy continues through her cherished grandchildren Aneisha
Rush, Jamie Ray, Mercedez McLeod, and Shawn Holmes, as well as her loving siblings Mary
Ross Hogan, Beverly Choinsky, Joe Ray, Tony Ray, Karen Clark, and Jeffrey Ray. Barbara was
also a treasured aunt to many nieces and nephews who all miss her dearly.
Barbara’s life was marked by dedication and hard work, having retired from both Clevite and
Swisher International. While her generous heart and unwavering love for her grandchildren
echoed the care she received from her own grandparents, the delightful way she spoiled them
was a unique creation all her own.
Playfully revered for her unique sayings and quirks, Barbara called DeFelice Pizza “Di
Poopaloos” and still referred to CVS as “Super X.” She pronounced “wash” like “worsh” and
wouldn’t let anyone she loved step foot out the door unless their clothes had been graced by an
iron. Her every action was motivated by a desire to ensure her family never wanted for anything.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Barbara’s life at Keller Funeral Home in Martins
Ferry, Ohio. Visitation will be held on Friday July 12, 2024 from 11 am until time of service at 1 p.m.
Barbara’s legacy will be cherished by all who knew her, and her love and warmth will continue to
inspire and comfort her family and friends. And every summer, when we look up in wonder at
the lights and colors of July we’ll be engulfed and made brighter, made better by the countless
memories of the kindness, humor, and unconditional love that was mom, grandma, sis, aunt,
and Barbara.
