Jane McFarland Obituary

Jane Richards McFarland, 87, of Martins Ferry, OH, died Monday, July 16, 2018.
Jane was the daughter of the late Richard and Sylvia Hammett Richards and was married to James J. McFarland from 1965 until his death in 1992.
Jane began working as a teletypist at The Times Leader in Martins Ferry while a senior at Martins Ferry High School. She later worked in the composing room of The Intelligencer in Wheeling for more than 30 years, for a combined 49 years at the two papers.
After retirement, she became a member of First Presbyterian Church in Martins Ferry, where she enjoyed playing euchre and volunteering at the annual rummage sale and funeral luncheons.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister Jo Ann Christoffers and brother-in-law Ferman Christoffers.
She is survived by her sons J.R. McFarland of Martins Ferry and David A. McFarland and his wife Betsy Bethel-McFarland of Martins Ferry; grandson Christian David McFarland and his wife Amanda of Reynoldsburg, OH; granddaughter Emma Skye McFarland of Martins Ferry; "granddaughters" Madison and Rylee Reis and Ella Hall; beloved cousins Jane Ann Hammett, Penny Moore, Mike Hammett, Becky Arnott, Tammy Smith, Judy Beyda, Dianna Brick, Lee Ann Brick and Dean Brick, and their spouses and children; and her four-legged "babies" Isabelle and Lucy.
Jane was a generous soul who gave everything she had and then gave some more. She loved chocolate, sauerkraut and turkey stuffing (hold the turkey); the color purple; "Gone With the Wind": reading crime novels; assembling jigsaw puzzles; watching TV and working the Sunday crossword -- in pen.
Friends will be received at the funeral home Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday, July 19, from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 400 Walnut St., Martins Ferry, OH 43935, or the Belmont County Animal Rescue League, 45244 National Road West, St. Clairsville, OH 43950.
The deacons of the church will hold service Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
